Pollina may seek loans to pay back contributions

Facing the prospect of giving back some campaign donations, independent gubernatorial candidate Anthony Pollina may ask supporters to loan him money to help.

Pollina’s switch from Progressive Party candidate to independent has put him at odds with Vermont campaign finance laws, which say independents can accept up to $1,000 per contributor for the general election. Members of political parties can accept $2,000 per donor because they’re running in both a primary and a general election.

Pollina spokeswoman Meg Brook says the campaign is contacting the 34 donors who, as it turns out, gave too much – about $27,000 total.
