Vermont State Police fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a barn fire that killed more than 100 dairy cows in Swanton Wednesday morning.

Firefighers were called to the Sunset Lake Farm just before 1:30 a.m.

By the time crews arrived the back of the barn had collapsed.

Fire officials say more than 100 dairy cows were trapped inside.

Swanton Fire Chief Pete Prouty says some cattle escaped from a different section of the barn. He says he doesn’t know exactly how many cows were killed.

This is the fifth major barn fire in northwestern Vermont in the past three weeks. None of the other fires are considered suspicious.
