Vermont law enforcement officials say an Essex couple killed by an Alaska man who crossed the continent in search of victims each tried to escape before they were killed in the basement of a vacant farmhouse.

Chittenden County State’s Attorney T.J. Donovan says Bill and Lorraine Currier showed extraordinary bravery and an extreme dedication and love for one another. He says they fought to the end.

Authorities were able to release the details of the Currier case after 34-year-old Israel Keyes apparently killed himself in a jail cell in Anchorage Sunday where he was being held on charges he killed an 18-year-old woman.

Keyes has been connected to at least five other killings, four in Washington state and one in New York.
