Vergennes officials are expected on Tuesday to take up the status of Police Chief Michael Lowe, who is facing drug and embezzlement charges.

Lowe has been on paid administrative leave since a June accident, in which he was accused of driving under the influence of drugs. He denies it.

Next week, Lowe is expected to answer charges of embezzlement by a public official, neglect of duty, possession of a depressant, stimulant or narcotic drug, and two counts of obtaining a prescription by fraud or deceit.

The city manager is expected to make a recommendation about Lowe to the board of aldermen Tuesday night. City officials say the special meeting is closed to the public.
