Petition would bar wind towers in Barton

Some Barton residents are upset about plans for a wind power project in a neighboring town.

So they’ve launched a petition drive to change their town plan to prohibit commercial wind power development in their community.

The move comes two months after the Public Service Board gave its approval for 16, 420-foot wind towers on a ridge line in Sheffield.

Barton petition drive leader Liz Butterfield says their efforts probably won’t have much impact on a project planned for Sheffield. She says it’s more about protecting Barton in the future.

The developer of the Sheffield — Massachusetts-based UPC Wind — still must win approval from that federal agency before proceeding with its project.
