An environmental panel has given the go-ahead to a Vermont developer planning to build 21 new multi-family residences in Newport.
Gilman Housing Trust plans to demolish five buildings at the former Sleeper Place and replace them with the $3.5 million development. Gilman was granted an Act 250 permit Wednesday by the District 7 Environmental Commission. Gilman is partnering with Northeast Kingdom Community Action.
The development will consist of five new buildings all making use of inner courtyards with green space, child play areas and walking areas with sidewalks.
Newport’s City Zoning Administrator says the project is a good fit for Newport.
The Caledonian Record says the project could be completed by next summer.
