Republicans and Democrats are beginning in earnest their campaigns for seats in the Vermont Legislature. Monday was the filing deadline to get on the primary ballot.

Democrats recruited candidates for each of the 30 Senate districts. Republicans were unable to find candidates in three Senate districts.

The two parties start the campaign with roughly equal strength in their race for the 150 House seats: both parties have candidates in at least 115 of the House districts. The last Legislative session ended with Republicans holding only six more House seats than the Democrats.

The Democrats say they’re happy that only six of their incumbents aren’t seeking re-election. The GOP is losing nine incumbents.
