Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Scudder Parker says Vermont is an energy crisis is looming this winter, and that Governor Jim Douglas is not being proactive in dealing with the problem.

Parker said on Wednesday there could be a perfect storm’ brewing for rising fuel prices this winter. He cited the continuing instability in the Middle East, the onset of Hurricane season, and now the shutdown of the Prudhoe Bay oil field in Alaska.

Parker’s comments follow a statement Douglas issued on Tuesday over the troubled Prudhoe Bay pipeline. The Governor criticized BP for being careless, saying the company’s actions are causing unnecessary increases in fuel prices.

In a statement on Wednesday, Parker dismissed Governor Douglas’ call to investigate the problem in Alaska, saying, “we need to be looking after our own house.” Parker said the state needs to be looking for solutions that will provide fuel assistance for the most vulnerable Vermonters, and will help reduce energy needs in the future.
