The recession is claiming seven jobs at Omya Inc.’s Vermont calcium carbonate operation.

The company is cutting 12 jobs throughout its U.S. operations.

Company spokeswoman Linda Pleiman says the layoffs are in response to market conditions.

She says the job cuts are throughout the company.

Five of the Vermont cuts are at Omya’s Florence facility. The other two are at the Proctor office.

Calcium carbonate is made from ground marble. It is used in thousands of products from antacid tablets to plastics.

Before the recent cuts, Omya employed 215 people in Vermont – 65 in Proctor and 150 in Florence.
