Officials Hope For Federal Help With Flood Repairs

Officials are hoping President Barack Obama will declare Barre a disaster area so the city will qualify for federal help in repairing damage from heavy rains and flooding.

Mayor Thomas Lauzon says his city has incurred millions of dollars in damage.

Nine homes have been evacuated and many residents will have to pay for their own repairs.

The latest challenge comes from a threat of landslides caused by saturated ground along river banks and other locations still wet from last week’s torrential rains and the flooding that inundated the downtown.

On Monday, Lauzon toured storm damaged areas along with Congressman Peter Welch.

Welch tells the Burlington Free Press the state’s congressional delegation is going to urge the president to approve Governor Peter Shumlin’s request for a disaster declaration.
