Norwich University is helping its host town build a new police station, making the first installment of what’s expected to be a $180,000 donation.

Richard Schneider is the president of the nation’s oldest private military college. Schneider presented a check for $36,000 to Northfield town officials on Friday. The college, which is based in Northfield, pledged previously to kick in 20 percent of the cost of the new police station over a five-year period. The building construction is expected to cost $890,000.

Northfield Police Chief Jeffrey Shaw says the college and the town have the same goal – keeping people safe.
