Northfield Select Board Weighs Dredging River

In Northfield, a selectman wants to dredge the Dog River and other flooded rivers in town before winter sets in.

Recent meeting minutes show that Selectman Kenneth Goslant says the gravel that would be removed during dredging could be reused by the Highway Department.

Town Manager Rob Lewis says he has to determine whether the town can do the work with the manpower and equipment it currently has available.

Dredging rivers and streams following Tropical Storm Irene has drawn criticism because some environmentalists say channeling rivers and armoring riverbanks will only stress natural habitat and exacerbate future flooding.
