The Defense Department expects to know more within days about what caused the death of Castleton native Jason Dene, who died in Iraq last month of a non-combat cause.

Officials say it will be up to the family to decide whether to release the cause of death of the 37-year-old sergeant first class who was three weeks from returning to the United States.

Dene was the nephew of actress and outspoken war critic Mia Farrow and the grandson of 1930s film star Maureen O’Sullivan.

Sergeant Dene spent nearly 20 years in the Army.

His wife says he was on his second tour of duty in Iraq and was to return to the states after the 15-month tour ended June 23.

Dene died May 25 in Baghdad.

Dene’s father says funeral plans are on hold.
