New Hampshire’s top cat is retiring.

Nin, the black-and-white house cat who is the mascot of weather observers atop of Mount Washington, has been a familiar sight to visitors at the summit of the Northeast’s highest peak. Nin has patrolled the summit building and surroundings for about a dozen years, keeping weather observers who spend a week at a time there company.

During the weekly shift change for observatory workers and volunteers Wednesday, Nin the cat is heading for lower ground, to a home in Gorham, where he will be close to his vet during his senior years.

Scot Henley, executive director of the Mount Washington Observatory, says Nin’s failing health is the reason for the retirement. Nin is about 18 years old and an infection recently claimed his remaining teeth.
