NH Senate eases tree trimming rules

Three months after a devastating ice storm, the state Senate has voted to make it easier for utilities to cut trees on private property to protect their power lines.

Under current law, utilities need permission from the property owner before they can cut. The bill would let power companies start cutting if owners did not respond to a written notice within 45 days.

More than 400,000 New Hampshire residents lost power during the storm – some for more than a week – after falling tree branches damaged lines.
