NH Senate candidates’ views on social issues

New Hampshire Senator John Sununu has twice helped block constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage and is prepared to do so again if re-elected. His chief rival in this fall’s U.S. Senate race, Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, says she’d vote to block a ban as well, but for a very different reason.

Responding to questionnaires from The Associated Press, Sununu said it should be left to the states to define marriage. Shaheen said she believes marriage should be left to the church but that no state or federal law should discriminate against anyone because of sexual orientation.

The candidates disagree on what role the government should play in another hot-button issue, abortion. Shaheen supports abortion rights and said she views confirming Supreme Court justices who will uphold those rights as a crucial responsibility. Sununu opposes abortion except in the case of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.
