Low-income adults between the ages of 19 and 25 would be allowed to buy insurance coverage from the New Hampshire Healthy Kids program under legislation approved by the Senate.

Teens now can qualify through age 18. The bill would allow those 25 and younger to buy into the program if they can’t be included on their family’s health insurance plan and their incomes are at or below 400 percent of the federal poverty level – which is a maximum of $3,610 per month per individual.

Gov. John Lynch supports the expansion which would not cost the state since the participants will pay monthly premiums.

The Senate voted 19-4 Wednesday to send the bill to the House.
