NH poll: adults support seat belt, marijuana bills

A new poll shows New Hampshire residents are evenly split on the issue of same-sex marriage.

Forty-five percent of those polled by Dartmouth College oppose legalizing same-sex marriage, and 41 percent support it. The difference was within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

The House gave final approval to a gay marriage bill last week and sent it to Gov. John Lynch, who hasn’t said whether he will sign it.

On other social issues before the Legislature, the poll found strong support for requiring adults to wear seat belts and legalizing the use of medicinal marijuana. A slimmer majority favored keeping the death penalty rather than abolishing it.

The telephone poll of 403 registered voters was conducted April 27-May 1.
