A New Hampshire lawmaker hopes more colleagues will join his fight against the death penalty now that New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson repealed capital punishment in that state.

The New Hampshire House is scheduled to vote on Democrat Steven Lindsey’s bill on Tuesday. He says Richardson – a former death penalty supporter – showed uncommon courage. Lindsey hopes the move will sway House members in New Hampshire.

The House criminal justice committee recommended killing Lindsey’s bill last week. The House will vote on several related measures Thursday, including a bill to establish a moratorium on the death penalty while a special committee studies the law.
