The House votes Wednesday whether the governor’s term should be changed from two to four years beginning in 2014.
The Senate approved the constitutional amendment, but the House committee that handled it is split over the question. Supporters argue a four-year term will give governors more time to govern. They say governors are barely in office before they have to begin raising money for the next election.
Opponents say governors should stand for election at the same time as executive councilors, state senators and representatives. They say voters should continue to judge a governor’s performance every two years.
A three-fifths vote is needed to pass the amendment.
