The New Hampshire House has approved a bill that would require all drivers and passengers to wear seat belts.

New Hampshire is the only state that does not require adults to wear seat belts.

Under current law, only children under 18 have to buckle up in New Hampshire. The legislation would create a "primary" seat-belt enforcement law, meaning police could stop motorists for not wearing seat belts even if they haven’t committed any other infraction. Twenty-five states have such laws.

The bill passed the House 197-155. It now heads back to a House committee to further study the proposed fees for those caught without a seat belt. The measure says violators would face a $50 fine for the first offense and $100 for each additional offense.
