NH hasn’t seen spike in tax abatement requests

Unlike some other states, New Hampshire hasn’t seen a spike in homeowners seeking property tax abatements, but some officials think that could change later this year.

Abatements lower a homeowner’s property assessment, resulting in a lower property tax bill. While some states have seen a flood of abatement applicants because of the economy, economist Dennis Delay says that hasn’t happened in New Hampshire because the state’s housing prices and economy in general have held up longer.

But both Delay and officials from several cities say they expect to see an increase eventually. People can file requests once they receive their fall tax bill.

If enough people win abatements, towns and cities might be forced to cut their budgets.
