New Hampshire’s consumer advocate is recommending that state utility regulators reject Verizon’s plan to sell its landline telephone service to FairPoint Communications, saying the deal would hurt customers.

Word of the recommendation came yesterday, a day after a utility hearing examiner made the same recommendation in Maine.

According to a legal brief from Meredith Hatfield, the two companies have not shown that the sale is in the public interest.

Verizon and FairPoint disagree, saying the deal is in the best interest of customers in all three states.

Regulators in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont would have to approve for the deal to go through.
