NH Considers Mandating Paid Sick Leave

Nearly 216,000 New Hampshire workers have no paid sick days – according to one study – and lawmakers are considering mandating paid days for some.

On Tuesday, a House committee will vote whether to recommend requiring employers with 15 or more workers to provide three paid sick days for workers with the company at least six months. The time would accrue at one hour per 30 hours worked. Employers who already offer three or more days of vacation or other personal leave time off would be exempt since their workers could use that time when they are sick to avoid losing pay.

Many business groups are opposed to the state mandating what they offer as benefits. Supporters say government should mandate a minimal benefit to protect the public from sick workers.
