The incoming head of the Vermont National Guard says the automatic federal spending cuts will cost about 500 guard employees about 20 percent of their incomes. In Cavendish, voters will take up a town meeting article on whether the town should assume ownership of an historic stone church. If they approve, the building will house an exhibit honoring author and Nobel laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who spent 18 years in Cavendish. Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine have joined more than a dozen other states in defending same-sex marriage as the Supreme Court prepares to hear two cases on the issue.
