A 33-year-old Vermont man has been ordered to undergo a competency exam after officials said he followed a prosecutor around the courthouse with a video camera.

Derick Niles of Newport pleaded not guilty to domestic assault on Jan. 25 in Orleans Superior Court.

Orleans County State’s Attorney Alan Franklin told a judge that Niles last week approached him in the courthouse with a video camera rolling, saying he had witnesses who could give him an alibi and that his case should be dismissed.

According to the Caledonian Record, Niles told the judge that police use video cameras when they stop people, and that he was using a camera only to prove he was being orderly.
