Newcomer, political veteran vie in Dem primary

Two democratic candidates for Lieutenant Governor are highlighting different issues.  Former Vermont lawmaker Tom Costello of Brattleboro wants to help low-income elderly Vermonters by allowing the state to pay their property taxes through a reverse annuity, to be paid back when their house is eventually sold.

Nate Freeman of Northfield says he feels strongly about the need to shut down the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant when the plant’s current license expires in 2012.

The two are vying in the upcoming September 9th primary for the Vermont Democratic Party’s nomination for lieutenant governor.

The winner of that contest will face three-term incumbent Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie in the November election.
