New requirements at the border today

Big changes today on Vermont’s border with Quebec.

Starting today, people entering the United States by land will be required to have a passport or a driver’s license and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

But no one will be turned back if they don’t have the additional documents.

There will be a grace period during which people will be told of the new requirements and allowed into the country without them.

Some fear the new requirements could keep Canadians from coming to Vermont to shop.

But most people along the border say they’re ready for the changes, or at least are aware of what they’ll need to get in to the United States.
