New law calls for insurance parity for prosthetic limbs

A new law calls on health insurers to treat prosthetic limbs at par with other types of illness and injury.

Lawmakers passed the measure after hearing from a South Burlington woman who could not get adequate health coverage for a prosthetic leg after hers was amputated below the knee due to bone cancer.

Eileen Casey says she used up her $10,000 lifetime cap for prosthetics, set by her insurer, Great-West Healthcare, on her temporary replacement leg, and then had no coverage left for her permanent replacement leg.

Douglas, who signed the bill yesterday, says the new law will have a big impact in the lives of a small number of Vermonters.
