A Worcester man has been appointed executive director of the Vermont chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Allen Gilbert will take over the organization by the end of the year from Leslie Williams.

Williams has served as the interim executive director since Benson Scotch retired in August.

Gilbert is a writer who has been active in statewide education issues.

He was the chairman of the Worcester School Board when it was part of the ACLU lawsuit that resulted in the old education funding system being overturned. That led to the adoption of Act 60.

Gilbert is a former editor at the Rutland Herald and has been a commentator on Vermont Public Radio.
