New statistics from the federal government show that in one seven Vermont households go hungry.

The data, released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shows that nearly 14 percent of Vermonters are categorized as "food insecure."

John Sayles is CEO of the Vermont Foodbank, and says his agency is seeing increased need as a result of flooding from Tropical Storm Irene that forced people out of their homes.

Officials from the Vermont Foodbank and Hunger Free Vermont say they’re working to reduce the number of households with food insecurity.
