New Assessment Tool For NH Prisons

In New Hampshire, prison officials are adopting a new method of assessing the appropriate rehabilitative and treatment programs for inmates.

Corrections Commissioner William Wrenn says the agency will begin training staff this month. The new assessment tool is the Ohio Risk Assessment System. It’s geared toward helping inmates successfully re-enter society upon release.

Wrenn says officials are optimistic the tool will help reduce the number of inmates who re-offend and are returned to prison.

The assessment takes a holistic look at the services and treatments offered individual inmates. It also reduces duplicate services, generates inmate-specific plans and predicts the likelihood of an inmate re-offending.

A grant is paying for the training.
