A national report says Vermont ranks fourth in the nation in the amount of money it spends on education per student but inequities exist in spending among school districts.

The annual report by Education Week magazine found Vermont spent $9,915 per student in the 2001-2002 school year.

That was up 7% from the year before and well above the national average of $7,734 dollars per pupil, but Vermont is at the bottom of the list in resource equity.

Education Commissioner Richard Cate disagrees with the analysis. He says he believes Vermont’s education funding formula is one of the most equitable in the country.
