N.H. cautioning hikers to prepare

Officials are cautioning hikers to prepare for winter conditions that could linger into May in the mountains.

Fish and Game Lt. Todd Bogardus says hikers should take into account the high snowfalls in many areas. He says deep snow may make it hard to find trails. Hikers should wear layers, bring snowshoes for deep snow and crampons for icy conditions. He says they also should expect hikes to take longer.

Bogardus says melting snows may also pose another challenge, that’s crossing swollen streams.

Bogardus says hikers also should be aware of avalanche hazards in some areas.
