Municipal utilities eye wind project on East Mountain

A group of municipal electric utilities wants to revive a wind project on an abandoned military post in the Northeast Kingdom.

The Vermont Public Power Supply Authority says its 13 municipal utilities need to replace some long-term contracts set to expire.

So the authority has decided to look into building a nine-megawatt wind project on East Mountain in East Haven.

East Mountain is the site of an old Cold War-era U-S Air Force radar base. The authority wants to build three wind turbines at the summit of the mountain.

Four years ago, a similar project was abandoned by a private developer after the Public Service Board refused to issue a permit.

The board said more studies were needed about how birds and bats would be affected by the wind turbines.

The utilities say they’ll conduct the studies as they analyze whether to build the project.
