Public television journalist Bill Moyers pleaded guilty today in a Bennington courtroom to a charge of negligent driving. The court ordered Moyers to pay a $750 fine. He was also ordered to either donate $1,000 to a local drunk driving program, or perform 200 hours of community service.

Moyers was stopped by a Vermont State Police trooper on Route 7A in Arlington last month. A roadside breath test showed his blood-alcohol content to be .10, which is over the legal limit of .08.

Moyers served as special assistant to President Johnson and publisher of the Long Island newspaper Newsday before joining public television in 1970. He currently hosts the weekly public affairs program, “Now.”
