The National Weather Service says it’ll be at least a week before technicians can get to a weather radio located on top of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington and figure out why it’s not working properly.
A National Weather Service meteorologist in Gray, Maine, says the transmitter is operating, but at low power. Mike Cempa says the transmitter is one of about a dozen that operate in New Hampshire and western Maine to provide weather forecasts and information.
He says weather watchers with the Mount Washington Observatory have tried to knock ice off the transmitter’s antenna, but that didn’t fix the problem.
He says technicians can go to the top of the mountain only on Wednesdays in winter, when observatory workers change shifts.
