Montpelier Misses 500 ballots, Seeks Recount

Montpelier is asking for a re-do on its vote counting, but the move isn’t expected to change the outcome of any of the races in the just-completed election.

Secretary of State Deb Markowitz says the city had a problem with a vote tabulation machine and brought in a backup machine. She says about 500 ballots that had been run through the first machine were not run through the second, so they were not counted.

Markowitz says counting the additional ballots in the heavily Democratic capital city may increase the narrow margin held by Peter Shumlin over Brian Dubie in the gubernatorial race. But she says the extra ballots won’t be enough to change the winner in any race.
