The members of the Montpelier Elks Club are considering selling their 16,000-square foot lodge.

The Vermont League of Cities and Towns has agreed to buy the property on the edge of Montpelier. The price was not released.

Elks members will be voting on March 11.

Elks Trustee Chairwoman Elaine Lussier says the club has seen its membership drop to 638 from about 1,200 and the overhead of the property is too great.

If the membership approves the sale, the club is hoping to design a smaller, more efficient lodge that would be built on club property its existing building.
