Montpelier considers road work changes

The City Council in Montpelier this week will consider proposals to move some road work from daytime to nighttime to alleviate major traffic tie-ups.

The state has been repaving U.S. Route 2 as it passes through the capital, and the city has been building a roundabout on that road at the east end of town. Together they’ve triggered traffic delays of 50 minutes or more.

Many owners of businesses along the affected roadways say they’re losing customers who don’t want to sit in such long traffic delays to get to them.

City officials agreed last week to investigate how much more it would cost to shift some of the work to nighttime, and the council will consider the question this week.
