A Mississippi man is the top bidder in the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife’s annual auction of moose hunting permits.

Joe Hill of Brandon, Mississippi, bid $8,001 for one of five permits that went to the highest bidders.

The winning bids raised money for Fish and Wildlife education programs.

The state is issuing a total of 1,255 moose permits for the split seasons in October and November.

The state estimates Vermont’s moose population at about 5,000.
