A U.S. Senate committee has advanced a bill that would give special designation to two northern Vermont rivers as "wild and scenic."

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved the bill affecting the Missisquoi and Trout rivers yesterday, a day after a companion bill authored by Vermont U.S. Rep. Peter Welch passed the House.

The bill would direct the U.S. Department of the Interior to study adding the two rivers to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.

That designation is designed to help protect the natural, cultural and recreational aspects of the rivers, and maintain their water quality.
