A sixth grader from Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury won the Vermont State Individual Spelling Bee yesterday.

Meigan Clark beat 41 students from across Vermont when she correctly spelled the word "scurrilous," which means "containing low obscenities or coarse abuse." Clark will now compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in June.

The second place winner was Samantha Storz of Kirby.
