(Host) Rutland lawyer William Meub has won the Republican nomination to run for the U.S. House, receiving about 60% of the vote. Meub, who lost a GOP gubernatorial primary two years ago, defeated opponents Greg Parke and Karen Kerin.

VPR’s John Dillon has more.

(Dillon) Bill Meub rolled to an easy win over his opponents, former Air Force pilot Greg Parke and former engineer Karen Kerin.

Meub attributes the win to the support he gained from a cross-section of Republicans.

(Meub) “Well, I think I’ve had the right message and I had the right people supporting me. I put together a very broad base coalition of individuals that believe that I was the best candidate that could run against Congressman Sanders. And I’ve had that base in terms of the legislators and senators and other leaders in the Republican Party. And that came through.”

(Dillon) For Meub, Tuesday’s victory was sweet. But the real struggle lies ahead. The Rutland lawyer now faces a popular six term incumbent. Meub acknowledged he starts the race as the underdog.

(Meub) “It’s certainly an uphill battle, but it’s one in which I believe that when the issues are presented and the contrasts are shown between what Congressman Sanders stands for and what I stand for. And the fact that I believe I represent the values of Vermonters, that I will win the election in November.”

(Dillon) Meub faced a more conservative opponent in the primary, a sign that the right wing of the party was not happy with his candidacy. Meub says the divisions no longer remain and that the party will be unified in the fall campaign.
