Vermont’s median household income is inching up and closing the gap slightly with the national average. That’s according to newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The data show that for the three years ending in 2000, the average median income in Vermont was $40,908. That figure grew to $43,212 in the three-year period ending last year. The median income nationwide was reported to be $43,527 during the three-year period ending last year.

Vermont’s poverty rate dropped a bit, from 10.1 percent of residents living in poverty in the earlier period to a rate of 9.9 percent in the later one.
