Two presidential hopefuls picked up big environmental endorsements while campaigning this weekend in New Hampshire.

In Concord, the president of Republicans for Environmental Protection endorsed Sen. John McCain during a tour yesterday of the toured the New Hampshire Audubon Society. Martha Marks said the McCain is the only Republican candidate who understands the connection between conservative values and environmental stewardship. The group also endorsed McCain in 2000.

Also yesterday, San Francisco-based Friends of the Earth Action, endorsed Democrat John Edwards for president.

Brent Blackwelder, the group’s president, said Edwards’ proposals to reduce carbon emissions, push for a global climate change treaty and create 1 million new jobs by investing in clean, renewable energy have pushed other Democrats to match or improve on those ideas.
