The Commonwealth of Massachusetts will begin testing for radiation in the towns closest to the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant, but not because of radioactive tritium found on the plant’s grounds.
Massachusetts Department of Public Health officials tell the Brattleboro Reformer that the tests will include examining vegetation, agricultural products, fish and surface water.
Suzanne Condon is the director of the Bureau of Environmental Health. She says the decision to do the radiation tests stemmed from a meeting held before the tritium contamination was revealed last January.
