Markowitz says high voter turnout could have helped school budgets

Secretary of State Deb Markowitz says the record voter turnout in the presidential primary might have helped Vermont towns pass their school budgets.

Tuesday’s primary set a record for turnout with 41 percent of voters going to the polls.

Only nine towns rejected their school budgets. The long-term average is more than 19 Town Meeting Day budget rejections.

Jeff Francis of the Vermont Superintendents Association says he thinks local schools have been working hard to contain costs and do their best to reconcile the needs of children and taxpayers.

John Nelson of the Vermont School Boards Association agrees with Francis. He says school boards try to ensure that when budgets reach voters they’re ready to be approved.
