Secretary of State Deb Markowitz has moved a step closer to running for governor in 2010.

Markowitz filed papers Friday saying she is raising and spending money as she explores whether to seek the office now held by four-term incumbent Republican Governor Jim Douglas.

State Senator Doug Racine of Chittenden County has already announced his intention to seek the Democratic nomination for governor in 2010. State Treasurer Jeb Spaulding says he plans to announce in the coming weeks whether he’ll pursue the job.

The Democrats are starting early, that’s in contrast to last year, when the party didn’t have a candidate until House Speaker Gaye Symington announced she was running in May.
