A man has been sentenced to 12 to 50 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl.

Derek Kimball of Hinesburg is the second person to be sentenced in a case that drew national attention because of the prison term given the other suspect.

Kimball, who’s 34, had pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.

Judge Edward Cashman sparked outrage in January when he sentenced Mark Hulett to a minimum of two months in jail.

The judge said he wanted to ensure that Hulett would receive sex offender treatment.

He later increased the sentence after the state changed its policy to allow Hulett to receive treatment in prison. Kimball faced a different judge, Michael Kupersmith.
